One of the things I wanted to do when I was in Rome was to see the city from the top of St. Peter’s Basilica. I decided to take the elevator, but there was still a long and challenging walk up many steps to the top. When I reached my destination there were impressive panoramic views. Since I was in no hurry to leave after the effort it took to get there I decided to have a good look around.
A stop on the way up:
Scenes from the top:
Later, a leisurely walk down with different views:
Back outside again. That was fun!

Love your bird’s eye view. It looks like it was worth the climb.
Thanks – I’m so glad I decided to walk to the top. The views really were fantastic!
What a beautiful place and so full of intrigue, power, ritual and majesty. I have never gone to the top and really enjoyed your photos and personal perspective. Thanks for sharing!!!
I really like your description! It was quite early when I got to St. Peter’s and there wasn’t any wait to get in. The view from the top was wonderful and I’m very happy to share these pictures!
Wonderful photos. The inside of the dome is beautiful.
BE ENCOURAGED! BE BLESSED!
It was so exciting to get such a great view of the inside of the dome – definitely one of the best parts of the walk to the top!
That first scene from the top made my jaw drop, how stunning! What a very spectacular place, your photos are wonderful.
Thank you! It was an unforgettable experience and I felt like I was able to see Rome very clearly… :)
St. Peter’s took my breath away, much like the views!
That’s the way I felt when I was there too – it’s breathtaking!
takes me back wish I had done the roof thing – I will in future
If you go back to Rome you definitely should try it – it’s really worth the walk!
Great perspectives, especially up top :-)
The weather was ideal that day and I had clear views in every direction!

What a Beautiful Place to Explore – loving your photos – thanks for sharing! Happy Halloween:)
It was a marvelous place to explore – and thank you!
Great photos! So much history. I love it. I really like the close up of the tiles.
Thank you! I took that extra picture of the tiles to show the details – I’m really glad you liked it :)
I love peering down on those rooftop gardens – they seem so peaceful. The book Basilica is supposed to be really good. I haven’t read it yet but it’s on my list.
I really enjoyed seeing the rooftop gardens too! And thank you for mentioning Basilica – I’m going to see if it’s at my library!
I realized later there’s a few of them with that name (of course)! But the one by R.A. Scotti is the one that’s supposed to be good.
Thanks for mentioning that! I found it and it looks really interesting :)
Beautiful photos of St. Peter’s Basilica! We walked up to the top, don’t know we’ll do it again… :)
That’s so great that you walked to the top! And I have to say I’m not sure I’d do it again either… :)
Wow, worth the effort to the top. I love it if I can get to the top of somewhere/something for a panoramic view, it puts a whole new perspective on the city that you’re visiting.
That’s a really good point! And a place can be quite impressive from a great height… :)
One of those places we’d all like to go some day, Meg. My fave shot is the wall art- it’s incredible!
It’s a place I’m sure you’d really like. I thought the tiled walls were breathtaking too!
I´ve visited the Vatican twice – but I never knew you could go up to the top!
I can definitely understand that. If you go to Rome again you should try it – the views are fantastic!
That looks like a spectacular view and definitely worth the effort to get to the top.
It was even more beautiful than I would have imagined, and it was worth it!
Beautiful photos…I haven’t been in Rome in awhile…I should go back on my next trip in Italy!
Thank you! I think you’d enjoy visiting Rome the next time you’re in Italy :)

It really was worth the walk. It was wonderful to just look out over the city and admire the view!
I love those costumes on those guards..lovely pics from up there!!!
Thanks – all these pictures make fun souvenirs!
Your lovely photos inspired me very much. My favorite is the third from the top.
I really like that picture too! It was such a great opportunity to see the inside of the dome… :)
I think you made the best decision to take your time and follow the bird’s eye view all the way! Wonderful photos of an amazing place!
Thank you Debra! I decided to enjoy the time I spent there and not hurry through. And I’ll always remember that the views were extraordinary in every direction… :)
Wow, what a beautiful view! I didn’t go to the top when I was there (can’t remember the reason), but I do remember St. Peter’s Basilica to be enormous on the inside, bigger than any I’ve ever seen before!
The view really is stunning! And you’re right, St. Peter’s is massive – there’s a lot to see when you’re there… :)
Beautiful shots. I like this perspective.
Thanks Karen. It does give you a unique view of the city!
I haven’t done that yet…next time I go to Rome.
I’ll look forward to finding out what you thought of it! But I think you’ll find it worthwhile… :)
Wow! The shot from the top is outstanding and the dome as well! My photos are old and faded. Your post makes me want to pack my bags and go back now :-)
Thank you! And I think that a return trip to Rome for another look at St. Peter’s sounds like a wonderful idea :)
Lots of gorgeous geometric patterns and colors. Your photos are stunning. ;-)
