I like looking up to see windows and balconies when I’m in Italy, and this last trip was no exception. Where there are windows there are usually shutters, which I find interesting because they might be open, closed or partially raised. Balconies often have colorful flower arrangements as well as laundry cheerfully hanging from the railings or attached clotheslines. In other words, there is a lot to see when you look at windows and balconies!
Many levels of windows
Balcony with laundry
Many shutters to see
Laundry and flowers
This picture has many of my favorite elements: windows, balconies, shutters, flowers and laundry. Adding to the scene that afternoon was the bright blue sky.
I have always enjoyed visiting Venice and one of the reasons is that once I move away from the crowds there are some very peaceful sights to be seen. I like to go off the main path and when I do I’ve found places like this.
It was very quiet except for the sound of a boat passing by. There were no people around and it was a wonderful experience.
As I continued walking a found a scene that combines several of my favorite things – water, a bridge, and fresh, crisp laundry hanging from the windows. Although I didn’t see anyone it shows that even in Venice people are doing everyday tasks but in an artistic way!

Windows can be an interesting part of a building both from the outside and the inside. When I travel I like to look for windows that are unique in some way. I always notice flowers that adorn a window, or there may simply be laundry hanging to dry.
