Winter to Spring

There have been some interesting variations in the weather this January.  First it was cold and snowy, then it got warm and over the weekend there was a tornado warning.  Now it’s cold again and it might snow in a few days. After all this I’m hoping for an early spring!  I’m going to Florida (Orlando) in a few days and it will definitely be warmer than it is here. I’ve checked the extended weather forecast and it should be warm and sunny while I’m there.  I’m looking forward to seeing some flowers too.  They are always so cheerful and provide a hopeful reminder that spring will be returning, and the sooner the better!

A Snow Day

The snow began to fall during the night and by morning this was the scene in my yard. So just for today my only traveling consists of walking to the back door and seeing this.  I haven’t noticed any birds and the only sound is that of snow sliding off branches to the ground.  I’m not sure how much snow has fallen but I can see it stacked on the post and the bird feeder.  Later on I will probably look at my books about Italy and do some daydreaming, but for now it is enough to be indoors, look at the snowy scene and make plans to go outside this afternoon to shovel the driveway!

Next month should bring warmer weather…

A Winter Walk

This is my second winter in Virginia and there has been a lot of sunshine during the month of January.  I saw a little snow one morning but it was gone by the afternoon.  Since the weather has been so mild I thought that I’d return to Colonial Williamsburg for a winter walk.  I’ve now been there all four seasons and it is a nice place to see in January.  There was even some greenery and I noticed plants growing in a sort of greenhouse.  Most of the people out walking wore light jackets and I was comfortable with my winter coat and a hat.  I started out wearing mittens but I kept taking them off to take pictures until I realized that I didn’t need them after all!

If you’d like to join me on this walk this is what we’ll see:

In a few days it’ll be February and then it will almost be spring!

Flowers for all Seasons

I’ve been thinking about this year and all the opportunities that I’ve had to see flowers while traveling.  It seems that each season features colorful and unique flowers.  Here are some of my favorites from the spring, summer, fall and winter.  It’s a nice way to remember the year!  I’m looking forward to the year ahead with new opportunities to travel as well as time to enjoy being near home.

I’ve noticed that spring and summer flowers are both bright and dainty:

Here are some interesting autumn and winter flowers:

I wish you a very Happy New Year!

Postcards from Williamsburg

A few weeks ago I drove to Colonial Williamsburg for the afternoon.  This is the first place I’ve visited since moving to Virginia last month.  The weather was perfect and warm enough that I was carrying my coat as I walked.  This was a very unusual thing for me to do in January!  As I walked around I decided to take some pictures as souvenirs of a mild winter day in a historic area.  Right now it seems more like winter to me.  However it should warm up in a few days and then I’ll have to go on more adventures.

It was wonderful to see these bright colors.
